About Newsprism

1. The Blog

Newsprism.wordpress.com is the complementary blog for Newsprism.com, a news portal containing links to 100 of the Internet’s most popular news sites, blogs, and columnists, all ranked by political orientation from left to right.

“Following news and politics with a big shovel,” Newsprism.wordpress.com combines serious media criticism and political analysis with a satirical style. For more details, please read our inaugural post, “Squeal Like a Pig.”

2. The Portal

Focusing on American politics, Newsprism.com ranks 36 news and commentary sites from left-leaning magazines (The Progressive, The New Republic,) newspapers (The New York Times, The Washington Post,) and television news organizations (CBS News, ABC News, CNN,) to leading right-leaning newspapers (The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times,) Internet news sites (Drudge Report, newsmax) and magazines (National Review, The Weekly Standard.) Four sites judged to be centrist/objective make up the middle of the “prism”: The Des Moines Register, Real Clear Politics, Polling Report, and Politico.

Also included are 16 left-leaning blogs (Daily Kos, Huffington Post) and 16 right-leaning blogs (Instapundit, PowerLine) as well as 16 prominent progressive columnists (Joe Kline, Paul Krugman, Frank Rich) and 16 prominent conservative columnists (Pat Buchanan, Peggy Noonan, George Will.) These 64 sites are not ranked, but simply listed in alphabetical order.

Newsprism is intended to guide you to some of the web’s most popular (and sometimes best) news and commentary sites while evaluating their political orientations as objectively as possible. The rankings, which are represented by a prism running from blue/progressive to red/conservative, are generated using a combination of targeted keyword searches and our independent news judgment.

3. Timeless News

Timeless News publishes news satire, which originally appeared online under the name RealStupidNews.com. Promising to “Skew the News and Skewer the Newsmakers,” RealStupidNews took aim at the left and right with equal abandon, earning friends–and enemies–on both sides of the aisle. The site won several awards at thesatireawards.com, including Best Overall Satire, and was featured on The Neal Boortz Show (scroll down to read “Kerry to Endorse New Purple Heart Band-Aids.”) RealStupidNews attracted a large number of libertarians and libertarian conservatives, leading the Libertarian Party to recruit RealStupid, aka Dr. Preston Coleman of Gainesville State College, as the official announcer and a featured speaker at the 2004  Libertarian National Convention in Atlanta, GA.

4. Political Satire

Dr. Coleman also write short fiction, which has been called “brilliant,” “powerful,” and “a public service.” The paperback versions of four of his works were featured in Independent Press Quarterly and Small Press Review.
