If journalists write the first draft of history, historians write the final one. Judging by two polls of historians conducted by the History News Network, one four years ago and the other last month, Bush has gone from bad to worse—and maybe, to worst.
In 2004, 415 historians were surveyed on Bush’s legacy. 81% believed the Bush administration would be judged a failure compared to 19% who believed it would be judged a success. 12% went so far as to say Bush would go down as the worst president in American history.
In 2008, 109 historians were surveyed. 98% believed the Bush years would be judged a failure compared to less than 2% who believed they would be judged a success. A staggering 61% said Bush would go down as the worst president in history.
The History News Network may not be the most objective source, but dismal evaluations of Bush aren’t confined to HNN. Eminent Princeton historian Sean Wilentz wrote in Rolling Stone two years ago that
George W. Bush’s presidency appears headed for colossal historical disgrace…. And that may be the best-case scenario. Many historians are now wondering whether Bush, in fact, will be remembered as the very worst president in all of American history.
Wilentz is joined by presidential historian Douglas Brinkley of Tulane University, who in December, 2006, wrote in the Washington Post that
it’s safe to bet that Bush will be forever handcuffed to the bottom rungs of the presidential ladder. The reason: Iraq … which is an unmitigated disaster.
Many will dismiss the nearly unanimously negative judgment of Bush as evidence of the liberal leanings of historians.
While the field does harbor a preponderance of liberals, historians as a group are notoriously cautious and circumspect, waiting for the historical record before pronouncing judgment. In addition, nowhere near 98% of histrians are liberal, meaning that the vast majority of moderate and conservative historians agree with their liberal colleagues.
Besides, as the most historically grounded conservative commentator, Pat Buchanan, notes, George Bush is anything but a conservative (see here, here, here, here, and here.)
Here’s a sample of the historians’ evaluations of Mr. Bush:
Glib, contemptuous, ignorant, incurious, a dupe of anyone who humors his deluded belief in his heroic self, he has bankrupted the country with his disastrous war and his tax breaks for the rich, trampled on the Bill of Rights, appointed foxes in every henhouse, compounded the terrorist threat, turned a blind eye to torture and corruption and a looming ecological disaster, and squandered the rest of the world’s goodwill.
With his unprovoked and disastrous war of aggression in Iraq and his monstrous deficits, Bush has set this country on a course that will take decades to correct. When future historians look back to identify the moment at which the United States began to lose its position of world leadership, they will point—rightly—to the Bush presidency.
…the paranoia of Nixon, the ethics of Harding and the good sense of Herbert Hoover…. God willing, this will go down as the nadir of American politics.
His domestic policies have had the cumulative effect of shoring up a semi-permanent aristocracy of capital that dwarfs the aristocracy of land against which the founding fathers rebelled; of encouraging a mindless retreat from science and rationalism; and of crippling the nation’s economic base.
George Bush has combined mediocrity with malevolent policies and has thus seriously damaged the welfare and standing of the United States…
His administration has been the most reckless, dangerous, irresponsible, mendacious, arrogant, self-righteous, incompetent, and deeply corrupt one in all of American history.
In the wake of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the United States enjoyed enormous support around the world. President Bush squandered that goodwill by taking the country into an unnecessary war of choice and misleading the American people to gain support for that war. And he failed utterly to have a plan to deal with Iraq after the invasion…. Mr. Bush inherited a sizable budget surplus and a thriving economy…. Bush transformed the surplus into a massive deficit. The tax cuts and other policies accelerated the concentration of wealth and income among the very richest Americans. These policies combined with unwavering opposition to necessary government regulations have produced the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. Then there is the incredible shrinking dollar, the appointment of incompetent cronies, the failure to react properly to the disaster of Hurricane Katrina, the blatant disregard for the Constitution—and on and on.
James Buchanan, Millard Fillmore, move over. Your failures appear to have been misoverestimated.

Not to mention that he is possibly the worst speaker in Presidential history. Letterman shows clips on a regular basis that make fun of his speaking blunders. I think he is such a bad speaker because he is probably the laziest president we have ever had. It seems like he takes 15 minuets to read over his speeches.

How can we prevent Bush from having a presidential library ? How do we make fools of our country
by allowing the perpetuation of this zealot who has ruined us financially and politiically. Our beloved Lincoln must be centifuging.

Yeah I don’t really like to get into politics, just doesn’t interest me, but after doing the little bit of research that I have George Bush is an idiot. I think it’s a pretty large statistic that 98% of historians voted his administration to be a failure…. politics is a numbers game.. looks like he lost a lot of his fans over the years!

In 2008, 98% of historians say Bush’s administration should be judged as a failure. This speaks volumes to me. I didn’t vote for him in the first place, but would John Kerry have had a greater impact on our economy? The simple truth is that George W. Bush came in to a well balanced economy, and had everything to lose. So he did just that. He completely ruined everything that Clinton had corrected. As for the conflict in the Middle East, I feel Bush has done a fairly decent job eradicating extremist leaders but has failed to properly address the overlying economic need for this war.

He is a liar and a crook. He has ruined this country during his administration and we are at an all time low. When you look at him giving a speech he looks like an idiot.

It is worth remembering that one of the most frivolous reasons some folks gave for voting GW Bush twice is that he seemed like a guy they would like to have a beer with. Now, 8 years later, many of them can’t even afford the beer they would have liked to share with him.
Even after the 8 years it has taken for the economy to unravel and Bush’s policies to be proven a failure, there are people who want to vote for John McCain based on the ridiculous premise that Sarah Palin represents everyday people–six pack Joes and hockey moms, ect. There seems to be no acknowledgement that intellectual curiosity and depth, along with an ability to work in a bipartisan manner, are critical elements in governing successfully. Being able to relate to everyday people is helpful but insufficient by itself in running such a large country.
With all the animosity that the McCain-Palin team has stoked, there is no way they would be able to govern effectively–especially with a Congress that will have a greatly increased Democratic majority.

Bush is a disgrace. The man can’t even speak English properly. He uses slang terms like “yall” and “we’re fixin’ to…” when addressing our country and the American people! What is wrong with this guy? He sucks if you ask me. The Bush administration SHOULD go down in history as a total failure. I have never heard people complain as much about our economy as they have with this dumby in office. I sure as hell didn’t vote for him. His dad basically sucked as president, I don’t really know why people would have thought he could do much better. Bush ruined and reversed anything that Clinton may have corrected or left in a stable situation. C’mon people, he was in there 8 years….what did he do?? NOTHINGGGG. not a damn thing. I get disgusted whenever i flip through the chanels and see his ignorant self on the television screen…he is a coward and the opposite of an intellect. I’m just glad he is finally out of there…

Being the Republican I am it is hard for me to say about thing about are president but the facts don’t lie. At first I was a firm believer and backer of George W. Bush but, I can now say I think he has brought this country more harm and disgrace than good. First of the econmy has taken the biggest hit under the Bush adim. and is in such a deep hole it will be hard for anyone to fix the problem. Secondly he has not taken our ecological threats as serious as they should be taken. I do how ever feel that he has done a great job with our National Security issues with terrorist. In closing I dont know if Obama or Mccain would have or will be able to fix the deep Economic problems this country faces.

I feel like our society puts way to much pressure and spotlight on our president. It was us, and a little help from Bush himself, that turned him in to a celebrity idiot instead of a respectful leader of the country. We have turned our own president into a laughing stock when really the joke is on us. The president can only do so much, that is why we have a system of checks and balances in America, so I wish people would stop being so quick to criticize our president when we need to step back and take a look at the bigger picture. In the end, I would like to admit that I am glad his term is almost over. I hope that Obama gets us back on track even though it will take time. And I also hope that our media does not turn Obama into a pop-culture frenzy and maybe we can finally have a leader that represents America as it should be.

Bush is our president. Even though he might not have done the best job out of all of the presidents we have had I think that he deserves the same respect. Though you might not agree with him or like him I think that everyone should just respect that he was the man elected to be in office and as the United States we should show support. Bush has a lot to deal with, more than other presidents. We are mocking and making fun of the leader that represents us as a country.

i do not think the bush administration was a total “failure” and i believe that labeling the president of this country an “idiot” is completely out of line. we, as a country, elected his as president. it is our fault that he was elected into office for a second term so wouldn’t that make us the idiots? the bush administration has “rolled with the punches”. they have dealt with what has been left for them to dealt with by the clinton’s reign in office. i hope that obama can get us back on track, but i think that’s putting too much hope in just one man. he wants such a big CHANGE but a big change at one time will create instability.
